Welcome to my blog, Talking About My Generation: Experience and Observation in Contemporary Culture and Counterculture.

There is the recurring question, “Who will be the Kerouac of our generation?” This is my attempt. That is a long and distant career goal, but my generation—those born in the eighties, who are coming of age in this technology, information, millennium era—should have a voice. We are the future. The post 9/11 adults are a new vision, a new attempt at a better world.

The college student demography and recent graduates are the focus, the future, the fringe of all cultural movements. Our generation is often misunderstood, underanalyzed. Yet, we are here to stay, so we deserve to be acknowledged, recognized, and praised.

Most people, myself included, are obsessed with the future, constantly yearning for tomorrow or some distant unknown. However, according the countercultural motto, we should live in the present, the here and now. Funny how it all works out because by observing the here and now, as this blog intends to do, we can envision the future. The generation that is currently coming of age, growing up in the information, digital age, is one which will lead our future. Thus, by understanding the current currents of cultural change, we can see where we are headed. By observing the intriguing, ever-important, and formative era of this youthful generation growing up, we can identify the ideology, values, preferences (all under the umbrella of culture) of my generation, which will undoubtedly have far reaching implications in determining the future.

Overall, this blog will attempt to simply observe cultural phenomenon that we all encounter every day yet fail to notice its significance. In my mind, culture matters more than most forces. In addition, everything has significance, meaning. The society my generation has spawned and its corresponding culture and counterculture are worthy of every consideration because it is the fundamental, underlying factor which makes us us. We are writing our social history. This is our era, our time to go about our existence full of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
